Spring Programme 2026

Tickets are now available to book via the Alhambra website for our Spring Programme starting on January 4th. Once again it looks like an exciting mix. Full of stars - from Daniel Day-Lewis and Sean Bean, through Brenda Blethyn, Andrea Riseborough and Brendan Fraser to Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson plus many others, brought to us by great directors such as Lynne Ramsay, Park Chan-wook and Jafar Panahi. And, of course, we have the 26th Keswick Film Festival, our finishing weekend this year, with it's usual amazing array of great films.

Our New Year begins with Fallen Leaves

Happy New Year everyone! We hope you have all enjoyed your Christmas, but, like us, you are looking forward to watching great World Cinema again…and We have some great films indeed lined up for 2024, with award winners and likely Oscar winners amongst films from all around the world… not to mention the Keswick Film Festival from 29 February to 3 March. 

We start on 7 January at 5.00pm at the Alhambra cinema with the latest deadpan comedy from the great Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki – ‘Fallen Leaves’: A lovely tale of ‘almost-doomed’ romance. Ansa is sacked from her shelf-filling, supermarket job for taking home out-of-date food to give to the poor. Holoppa is sacked from his job in a scrapyard for drinking at work. All looks lost for both of them until they meet at an eclectic karaoke bar (!) and love beckons… but a lost address and even a charming stray dog still stand in their way… 

We are hoping for some great evenings in a full Alhambra over the coming months.  We are looking forward to seeing films again… and to seeing you! All are welcome. We hope these films will appeal to you; see you there!

Merry Christmas From The Club

Our season ended on a high note with the largest audience of the season - 109 - watching 'Nobody Needs to Know', a sweet love story set on the beautiful Hebridean Island of Lewis. With your help we can keep these numbers growing; whether you have been a regular or if you haven't been for a while, do come along and see our Spring Season films...and bring your friends! 

We are still a friendly club, always pleased to see you, and our programme has some great looking films as always, from award winners such as 'Anatomy of a Fall', to future winners (is 'Poor Things' going to do as well at the Oscars as they say?); from the documentary '20 days in Mariupol' to the Spanish drama '20,000 Species of Bees'.

We start back on 7 January with 'Fallen Leaves' from the always dependable Finish director Aki Kaurismaki. We hope to see you there! Meantime, have a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Autumn Programme

We get our Autumn Programme off with a bang on September 10th with ‘And then Come the Nightjars’, based on the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001, which should raise a lot of local memories, especially as the Director is coming for a Q&A too. We have a couple of big stars for you - Penelope Cruz in ‘L’immensità’ and Isabelle Huppert in ‘La Syndicaliste’, not to mention Sigourney Weaver in ‘Master Gardener’ or Ben Whishaw in ‘Passages’. 

We always try to go around the world; this season is not quite as all-encompassing as some years, but we do manage Italy, France, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Spain and Canada outside the UK and USA. Talking of Germany, we were pleased you voted for ‘Afire’, as German films are a pretty rare thing for us. We have four films from the UK this year, which include ‘Scrapper’ - a classic Keswick film - and ‘Pretty Red Dress’ - with Tina Turner music a-plenty from Alexandra Burke and an interesting looking plot…‘Past Lives’ looks like a potential ‘Film Of the Season’ to me, with a cross-decades, cross-continents love story from South Korea and the USA. ‘Small, Slow but Steady’ might be the most unusual little film, about a deaf girl who takes up boxing to escape her isolation. Recommendation: Try to avoid reading reviews of ‘Master Gardener’ to get the best out of it… A rare 18-rated film, ‘Passages’ comes with great acting reviews...and it is 18 for a reason! ‘Brother’ looks good to us, which ‘unpacks Black grief in a way we haven’t seen often’, and we finish back in the UK with ‘Nobody Needs to Know’, set in the wild beauty of the Hebrides. Hopefully a film for all tastes here; we hope you enjoy all the ones you get to see

Autumn Season Starts on 8 September

We hope you have had a great summer (despite the weather), but you may have noticed that the evenings are getting shorter...sadly Autumn is approaching. The good news is that means the Film Club will start up again soon! The films are booked, the brochure is being printed; all we need is YOU!

Our first film will be on Sunday 8 September at 5.00pm - but be there for 4.15 to get your FREE drink and, maybe, sign up as a member: for only £10 you get £1.50 off every club film (and £1.00 off every Festival film you see). As the Americans say, 'you do the math'! You also get a chance to influence the programme; seven of the films this season were voted for in a members' ballot.
So what is coming up? We have already announced this to last year's members and now full details of all the films can be found on the Club Website. You can also view the brochure which will be available shortly, we'll post it to all members (another reason to join) otherwise you can pick it up at the Alhambra or Booths from the beginning of September.

New Programme

Our Autumn programme starts on Sunday 10th September with A Man Called Ove, the third most watched swedish cinema-film in Sweden of all time. Other highlights include God's Own Country, which you'll no doubt hear a lot more about when it goes on general release next week. New films from acclaimed directors François Ozon and Kelly Reichardt, a celebration of 60s cinema with a 50th anniversary screening of The Graduate and a chance to find out how After The Storm ends. 15 great films from all around the world to take us through to the end of the year, take a look at the trailers below...
